Shopify gives you a fast, crawlable, reasonably structured store out of the box. What it cannot give you is what now decides discovery: being mentioned, reviewed and cited somewhere other than your own domain.

What Shopify already handles

Sitemaps, canonical tags, mobile rendering, HTTPS, basic product structured data. Do not spend money on agencies re-selling these as an audit.

What Shopify does not handle

  • Collection page content. Shopify collections ship as a grid with a title. They need real copy, buying guidance and internal links to rank.
  • Product structured data depth. Default markup is thin. Add availability, real review data, GTIN/MPN, shipping and return details — this is exactly the data assistants surface.
  • Faceted URL bloat. Filter and sort parameters generate crawlable duplicates. Control them with canonicals and robots rules.
  • Blog structure. The default blog is an afterthought; treated seriously it becomes the internal-link engine that feeds collections.

Making the store machine-readable

Assistants read your store the way a careful crawler does. Give them unambiguous facts:

  • Product, Offer, AggregateRating and BreadcrumbList structured data on every product
  • Organization markup with consistent brand naming everywhere
  • Shipping, returns and warranty as crawlable HTML, not PDFs or JS-only widgets
  • An llms.txt describing what you sell and linking your key collections

The part that actually decides AI answers

An assistant asked "best [product category] store in [market]" does not browse the web store by store. It reproduces what published sources say. Independent coverage is the evidence.

For most stores that means:

  • Category roundups and gift guides in relevant media
  • Product reviews on independent publications
  • Founder, sourcing or business stories in business and regional press

Our ecommerce, fashion and beauty and lifestyle publisher categories cover most retail verticals, and the AI Authority Score shows which of those publishers are observed influencing AI answers.

Sequence

  1. Fix collection content and structured data
  2. Publish three to five genuinely useful buying guides
  3. Place four to six independent editorial mentions per quarter
  4. Measure named-mention share monthly — see how to measure AI search visibility
